You may find that some roofing contractors may suggest that you just add a new and additional layer of shingles on top of your existing roof, or just try to patch up a certain and small section. But in most cases, this should not be done. Okay … let me say it clearly. Unless there’s a very specific reason for doing so, .. this should NOT be done, … ever.
By patching just a little section (or several little sections) of your roof or putting new shingles over old, could result, over time, in more damage and extensive repair costs to your roof. If you fail to properly protect your roof (and home), by NOT replacing the roofing shingles when they appear to be near their “end of life” expectancy or when they are no longer able to properly protect your roof and home from the rain, snow, heat, hail, etc., the cost of repairing and replacing your roof is likely to “go through the roof” (no pun intended).
If your roofing materials are failing to protect your home, the problems can including things such as soft spots or rotten wood (that can be occurring even if you don’t yet see it), as well as any number of other serious problems.
Just think about your shingles and the punishment they take on as they are exposed, every day, to the harsh temperatures and changes in our weather, as they attempt to protect you and your home. Imagine lying on your roof and basking in the sun, or the rain, or the snow, etc., 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Because that is exactly what your shingles are doing. It’s a pretty thankless job.
